by Daphne Du Maurier
Rating: **
I was quite disappointed in this book. I ordinarily love Daphne Du Maurier and was thrilled to discover this book in a charity shop recently has I thought I had read all there was to read by her. The writing is good; some beautifully turned phrases and descriptions. But, there is simply no story, the narrative just meanders with character description and not particularly well-rounded. It seems very laboured and lazy at times. Nothing really happens and none of the three main characters are engaging or interesting enough, all rather stereotypical and dull. A very odd book from Du Maurier; a lot of her writing is off the beaten track, but this book just did not work for me at all.
